Live at the Budokan is a live album by the Ian Gillan Band, recorded live on 22 September 1977 in Tokyo, Japan. Originally it was released only in Japan, in 1978 by EastWorld Records, being 'Live At The Budokan' (EWS-81112) and 'Live At The Budokan Vo. ' (EWS81113). Each was a single LP in a gatefold sleeve. Several songs from the set did not make it to the albums, as evidenced by audience tapes (ROIO). Originally it was released in two volumes in Japan in late 1977 and early 1978 by EastWorld Records. In July 1983 it was re-issued as a double album in the UK by Virgin Records. The latter features the full setlist including "My Baby Loves Me", which had been omitted from the previous releases.

First released as a two-LP set in 1982 and reissued on a single CD in the early '90s, Budokan boasts strong extended versions of Purple classics like "Smoke on the Water," "Woman from Tokyo," and the moody ballad "Child in Time," as well as some songs he'd recorded for his solo projects, including "Clear Air Turbulence," "Money Lender," and "Over.

The band Gillan adopted an approach, courtesy of Gillan guitarist Bernie Torme. During Ian Gillans stint with Black Sabbath in 1983, they performed Smoke on the Water as a regular number on encores during their only tour together. It remains one of the few songs that Black Sabbath has ever played live.
