The recording sessions for the Byrds' fifth album, The Notorious Byrd Brothers, were conducted in the midst of internal turmoil that found them reduced to a duo by the time the record was completed. That wasn't evident from listening to the results, which showed the group continuing to expand the parameters of their eclecticism while retaining their hallmark guitar jangle and harmonies. But the Byrds did not bury the essential strengths of their tunes in effects: "Goin' Back" (also written by Goffin & King) was a magnificent and melodic cover with the expected tasteful 12-string guitar runs that should have been a big hit.

The Notorious Byrd Brothers is the fifth album by the American rock band the Byrds, and was released in January 1968, on Columbia Records. The album represents the pinnacle of the Byrds' late-60's musical experimentation, with the band blending together elements of psychedelia, folk rock, country, electronic music, baroque pop, and jazz. With producer Gary Usher, they made extensive use of a number of studio effects and production techniques, including phasing, flanging, and spatial panning.

The Notorious Byrd Brothers (1968). Sweetheart of the Rodeo (1968). Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde (1969). Sweetheart of the Rodeo is the sixth album by American rock band the Byrds and was released on August 30, 1968, on Columbia Records (see 1968 in music). Recorded with the addition of country rock pioneer Gram Parsons, it became the first major album widely recognised as country rock, and represented a stylistic move away from the psychedelic rock of the. band's previous LP, The Notorious Byrd Brothers.

The best word to summarize The Notorious Byrd Brothers is transitional. It was also their first record to exhibit overt country leanings – by the Sixties’ end, everybody was getting back to the country, but the Byrds were there first, and on Notorious Byrd Brothers you can hear them saddling up the horses. The album’s ethereal, fresh-scrubbed sound owes much to producer Gary Usher, the auteur behind countless Sixties surf-pop records and co-author of Beach Boys classics like In My Room.

The Byrds started recording this 1968 album with four members and ended up with two, but the internal turmoil isn’t reflected in the harmonious songs and adventurous spirit. While there’s a golden glow to the nostalgic reverie of Goin’ Back and country picking of You Ain’t Going Nowhere, the group also push boundaries: Artificial Energy soundtracks a drug trip with blaring horns and phased guitars. And on the anti-conscription song Draft Morning, tinkling instrumentation and gentle vocals run into careening brass and gunfire sound effects
