Paul Simon is Jewish, Carrie is half Jewish, hence the line, "One and a half wandering Jews. When asked if he made a conscious effort to put religious overtones in the song, Simon replied: "No, it wasn't conscious. In fact, I thought it was actually funny. For the Hearts And Bones album, Simon took a different approach to his songwriting. The imagery started to get a little interesting.

Hearts and Bones is the sixth solo studio album by Paul Simon. It was released in 1983. The album was originally intended to be called Think Too Much, but Mo Ostin, president of Warner Bros. Records, persuaded Simon to change it to Hearts and Bones. The album was written and recorded following the Simon and Garfunkel Concert in Central Park in 1981, and the world tour of 1982-1983.

Hearts and Bones was originally released in 1983. This remastered version is spellbinding and deserves full honors in the Paul Simon portfolio. As Paul approaches the age of 70, he still performs on stage to the delight of his followers is for Paul a resting place. When the day does eventually arrive for Mr. Simon to say "goodbye", most might say "Hearts and Bones" is but a slice of his musical adventure ; full of musical artistry and brilliance.

Hearts and Bones was a commercial disaster, the lowest-charting new studio album of Paul Simon's career. It is also his most personal collection of songs, one of his most ambitious, and one of his best. It retains a personal vision, one largely devoted to the challenges of middle-aged life, among them a renewed commitment to love; the title song was a notable testament to new romance, while "Train in the Distance" reflected on romantic discord
