Norman’s folktale tells the story of resistance among the folks in a mythical hill domain ruled by an absurd but evil King. The folktale hero Jack is the fugitive leader of the people’s revolt. Ancient Creek was first published in 1976 as a spoken-word album by June Appal Recordings, a division of Appalshop. The original recording has been newly released as a CD by June Appal.

Gurney Norman (born 1937) is an American writer, documentarian, and professor. Gurney Norman was born in Grundy, Virginia in 1937. He grew up in the southern Appalachian Mountains and was raised alternately by his maternal grandparents in Southwest Virginia and his paternal grandparents in Eastern Kentucky in several towns, but primarily in the small community of Allais, near Hazard, in Perry County. He attended Stuart Robinson School in Letcher County, Kentucky, from 1946 to 1955

First recorded as a spoken-word album by Appalshop in 1975, the original live recording of the folktale Ancient Creek by Gurney Norman (read by the author) has been released as an audio CD from June Appal Recordings. It is a companion piece to Norman's recently released book Ancient Creek: A Folktale (Old Cove, 2012).
