Georges (Gyorgy) Cziffra was born in Budapest on 5th November 1921. His parents had been expelled from Paris back to Hungary at the beginning of the war and in his memoirs 'Cannons and Flowers' Cziffra tells of his birth into abject poverty and of the squalid life in the refuge camp nicknamed 'Angel Court' by its bedraggled, Dickensian inhabitants.
