Zombie" is a protest song by Irish rock band The Cranberries, written about the 1993 IRA bombing in Warrington, and in memory of two young victims, Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry. It was released in September 1994 as the lead single from their second studio album, No Need to Argue (1994). It preceded the release of No Need to Argue by two weeks. The song was written by the band's lead singer Dolores O'Riordan, and reached No. 1 on the charts in Australia, Belgium, France, Denmark and Germany.

The Cranberries Zombie era was the accompanying video, in which the singer was painted gold and surrounded by silver-painted cherubs. It was inter-cut with documentary footage of soldiers and children on the streets of Northern Ireland, filmed by director Samuel Bayer, who also made the videos for Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit and Blind Melon’s No Rain. I actually thought the director was very brave, said O’Riordan. Parent album No Need To Argue went on to sell 17 million copies, and made O’Riordan very rich. I wouldn’t change anything about it, because it did so well, she said. It was well-written and it was well-composed. I think it did so well because it’s hard to categorise it. And I still like singing it. The cranberries revisited Zombie last year when they re-recorded an acoustic version with the Irish chamber orchestra for the band’s reworked greatest hits collection Something Else.

After The Cranberries' debut album, people thought they had the band sussed out. The Limerick band were part of the Celtic rock tradition, their shimmering, sorrowful ballads brought to life by Dolores O'Riordan's bell-clear vocals. Zombie shattered that illusion. A seething condemnation of the IRA, it was backed by pummelling, distorted guitars while O'Riordan's lilt was contorted into a primal howl: "What's in your head Zombie?
