The Morning After Girls chasing us under. The Morning After Girls shadow evolve. The Morning After Girls hidden spaces. The Morning After Girls fall before walking. The Morning After Girls fireworks. The Morning After Girls straight through yo. p3. The Morning After Girls interlude. The Morning After Girls hi-skies. The Morning After Girls lazy greys. The Morning After Girls run for our lives. The Morning After Girls always mine.

It’s not so much an album as a soundscape, and it takes you on a roller-coaster journey through the world of the Morning After Girls. The name, however, is somewhat misleading as the only girl in the band is Aimee Nash, who some may remember from a brief appearance as a vampiric chanteuse in Queen of the Damned. This album is like one of the compilations you make before going on holiday, with all your favourite tracks from a variety of genres that you listen to over and over again without getting tired of it or using your skip facility. Even the twisted instrumental opening track and Fall Before Walking, which is an unexpected blast of serrated white noise, merit repeated attention. There are tracks that have you tapping your feet, there are tracks that are just made for chilling out by a pool and there are tracks that would have a student mosh-pit packed in ten seconds flat.

It’s been said that on Shadows Evolve, The Morning After Girls do not connect with their listeners ... and perhaps that’s true; in the nature that the band’s charms are obvious, that their sound is transparent, their influences are too ever-present, that they’re intent on creating skyscrapers, when they should be capitalizing on their lush and dreamy visions, rather than trying to stand toe to toe with the likes of The Dandy Warhols, or The Sand Pebbles.Regardless, there are some fine moments to be discovered here, ideas that are not drastically new or visionary, but nonetheless, interesting and enticing ... just listen to “Slowdown” or “Hidden Spaces.” But perhaps that’s me, forever lost, wrapped in the velvet warmth of the night, the eternal cloud chaser ... one eye open, one eye dreaming.Review by Jenell Kesler
