Ruins is the tenth studio album by Grouper, the stage name of American musician Liz Harris. It was released in the United States on October 31, 2014 on Kranky. In a statement accompanying the announcement of the album's release, Liz Harris described its recording process: While in Portugal, where she stayed in a house owned by the aunt of music director Sérgio Hydalgo, Harris listened to records by Carlos Paredes, Nina Simone and Leonard Cohen.
Ruins has a vivid sense of place. Harris recorded the album in 2011 during an artistic residency in Aljezur, Portugal-a tiny coastal town tucked inside a nature preserve on the southwestern corner of the country. In a press release, she describes the pleasures of recording simply, hiking to the beach, and getting lost in her head, working out "a lot of political anger and emotional garbag. he album is a document. A nod to that daily walk.

Ruins was made in Aljezur, Portugal in 2011 on a residency set up by Galeria Zé dos Bois. I recorded everything there except the last song, which I did at mother's house in 2004. Iʼm still surprised by what I wound up with. The path wound through the ruins of several old estates and a small village. The album is a document. Living in the remains of love. I left the songs the way they came (microwave beep from when power went out after a storm); I hope that the album bears some resemblance to the place that I was i.
Ruins, the latest album from Liz Harris’ Grouper, is a peculiar and beautiful monument to the ruins of the past; a document, Harris wrote in the release notes, to living in the remains of love. The bare facts of Ruins’ creation given to us by Harris in those notes are more relevant than most to understanding this record. Aside from a few vocal overdubs, the songs are presented exactly as they were recorded - in a single take.
What a fitting title that is. I have played with this theme in the past - comparing album titles with the content, drawing different parallels and whatnot, yet it never ceases to intrigue. Ruins is a memento of disrepair; I envision Grouper, aka Liz Harris, gathering the pieces of a love lost, or soon to be. If there is passion, it is long subdued. Imagine the flood of emotions as you watch your family home burn down, then imagine the resignation as you sift through the ashes afterwards
Love Among the Ruins (1997) was the first album released by 10,000 Maniacs with their new lead singer, Mary Ramsey, after Natalie Merchant left in 1993. On an earlier acetate version of this album, "Smallest Step", "Beyond The Blue" and "Time Turns" were also included. All three were re-recorded, "Smallest Step" for inclusion on The Earth Pressed Flat album.
