With Smote Reverser, they make their most concerted attempt to reconcile those diverging impulses. The album is a predictably loud reaction to last fall’s Memory of a Cut Off Head, a stripped-down psych-folk pastorale (released under the OCS handle) that saw Dwyer sharing harmonies with singer Brigid Dawson. She lends her voice to this record as well, but don’t expect a return to the adrenalized corkers that defined the band during her previous 2010-2013 tenure with the group. Smote Reverser rocks out in a decidedly different manner than the band’s usual fuzz-pedal freakouts. Oh Sees albums have long reveled in the tension between the band’s aggression and Dwyer’s frisky, mischievous vocal style, but on Orc, it became evident just how well his voice sincerely lent it itself to the theatrical exposition of prog.

Strip away the excessive noodling and ‘Smote Reverser’ could be up there as one of Dwyer’s best in recent years. Their latest, 'Smote Reverser,' is no different. The album treads a very fine line between Doors-inspired 70's rock and garage punk, occasionally delving into a more modern interpretation of psychedelic rock. The riff on "Sentient Oona" sets the tone early, as the song regularly bounces between a carefree, jamming.

Smote Reverser is undeniably an Oh Sees record, with all 20 years of the band's history coming through every note played and sung, but it feels like a huge step into something new that's sure to be just as exciting and unpredictable. ThereAnother very solid Oh Sees album. Overthrown in particular is a wonderful smack in the face and the rest of the album is great as well. There are, as usual, quite a few enjoyable psychedelic jams too. It's a bit longer than usual, but it's a fun listen from start to finish.

The album art for Smote Reverser looks like a death metal album cover. Why’d you decide to go with that for this one? I always wanted to work with someone who does pulp sci-fi record covers. Are there any genres or styles you’d really love to try working into the Oh Sees that you haven’t tried yet? Right now anything that’s super unhip. I’ve been really, really digging into a lot of European prog from the '70s.
