Complete your Peter Frohmader collection. On Orakel Rudi Haunreiter and Stephan Manus from the FORGOTTEN ENEMY EP feature on drums and violin respectively. This tape is however, nothing like that, his previous release, due in some part to the dumping of Frohmader's lethal bass, but also to a much more complex approach to the structure of each piece, and indeed to the sounds themselves. After an initial rejection (due to a hangover) I find myself putting this tape on almost constantly.

For many years the bass guitar was considered to be a dull lifeless instrument that lacked the sensitivity of the acoustic bass. Indeed it wasn't until Jaco Pastorius picked up a Fender Precision fretless in the early seventies that it was even considered to be an instrument for serious musicians. Obviously this absurd opinion has been rectified, yet there are many other useful members of the bass guitar family, such as the 5, 6, 8 and 12 string basses and the Chapman Stick that still tend to be dismissed as worthless gimmicks. This however is a situation that the German bass player Peter Frohmader appears to be attempting to change. His earlier album NEKROPOLIS 2 expounded a particularly articulate argument for the use of 8 string bass, while this EP, FORGOTTEN ENEMY seems to be a manifesto for the complete bass family, since it features some of the most tasteful and effective 8 string bass, Chapman Stick and 4 string fretless bass to be found on record. It would be irresponsible to place too much emphasis in the didactic nature of this album, for it is by no means a collection of sterile, academic sounding performances. Instead Frohmader has applied his usual expert use of space to what is for him an untypical sound that seems to be aimed somewhere between Material's MEMORY SERVES and Miles Davis' ON THE CORNER. The resulting concoction is a spirited production that features the influences taken to a logical and yet unexpected conclusion. Take for example the title track or the piece Abdul A, both of which feature a superlative use of Miles Davis/Olu Dara like sound that is produced on the trombone as a tonal colorant rather than as a solo. Or there is the track Full Moon which perhaps most clearly demonstrates Frohmader's questing nature, featuring as it does some excellent fretless bass, guitar and most importantly the use of Simmons drums as a good deal more than mere rhythmic device.Frohmader should be applauded for his audacity; he's shown conclusively that people outside the Material circle can produce first-class harmolodic music that deserves your support.by Alan & Steve Freeman, first published in Audion 1 (1986)
