In 2002 The Used exploded with their self-titled album and continued to make fast and slow almost ambient songs that mix pop as well as metal into their arrangements. They continued this with 2004's emotional In Love and Death. 2007 marked a bump in the bands creativity though. Lies For the Liars featured a bunch of fast paced songs along with singer Bert McCracken attempting to be more brutal than ever. Blood On My Hands" is the perfect opener to Artwork, as it serves much like Thrice's "Image of the Invisible" for their Vheissu album. The song is the only one that could be greatly compared to the bands past material that was heavier.
But The Used new album Artwork is different. Artwork is above Lies for the Liars but below the first two albums. The sound of the CD brings back memories from In Love and Death but without as much screaming(by the way the screaming is only in the background). The highlights of the new album is some of the slow stuff. But the Problem I have with this album is that some of the songs on the album sound alike. But they don't sound DragonForce alike which is definitely a good thing.
On their fourth full-length, Utah’s the Used have delivered not only the definitive album of their career, but arguably one of the best records you’ll hear in 2009. Every track comes armed with a truly stratospheric chorus, yet no two songs tread the same path. The band explore a variety of moods as they churn through adrenaline-fueled monsters ( Sold My Soul ), groove-heavy pop anthems ( Come Undone ), ominous rockers ( Meant To Die ) and occasional deviations into more delicate territory ( Kissing You Goodbye ). Throughout, the confessional tone of Bert McCracken’s lyrics.
