Upstairs at Eric's is the debut album by British synthpop duo Yazoo (known in the US and Canada as Yaz), released in the UK on Mute Records on 20 August 1982. It was produced by the band and . Radcliffe, with assistance from Mute label boss Daniel Miller on some of the tracks.
Album of the Day. Yaz. Yazoo. Monday, July 3, 2017. Between stints with Depeche Mode and Erasure, keyboardist Vince Clarke teamed with soulful singer Alison Moyet to form Yazoo. It's the lead-off track to the duo's 1982 debut UPSTAIRS AT ERIC'S, which also includes the . hit Only You and such distinctive recordings as Bad Connection and Winter Kills. Produced by Eric Radcliffe (whose studio inspired the title), the album rose to the N. spot on the . album chart and was one of the first to successfully combine electronica and R&B, influencing such hitmakers as Deee-Lite and the Pet Shop Boys. Vince Clarke celebrates a birthday today, and in his honor, we'll spend a little time UPSTAIRS AT ERIC'S.
Producer Eric Radcliffe owned the upstairs recording space, a tidbit that solves the riddle of this album's title. Yaz decided to track new music there as the schedule allowed, which meant early in the morning when nobody else was using the equipment. The more uptempo "Don't Go" was issued about a month before Upstairs at Eric's hit store shelves, and it soared to No. 3 in the . while topping the Billboard Dance chart. That quick success, however, belied myriad problems behind the scenes. They were still woefully inexperienced
