Just More Idle Chatter. Paul Lansky: Fantasies and Tableaux.

With ter", Paul Lansky attempted to make a piece that would withstand the monotony of archival recording, future-proofed against the technological developments in the field of digital sound manipulation. It's important to note that the 1987 version "just more idle chatter" was far more sporadic overall than the two other pieces. In that piece, Lansky was more concerned with constructing different relationships between the foreground babble and the droning background layer, and he broke-up the overall form with a series of dramatic amplitude changes.

This collection of Paul Lansky's & Chatter' pieces dates from 1995, and includes the first three of the series: "Idle Chatter" (1985), "just more idle chatter" (1987) and ter" (1988). There has in fact been at least one further addition to the series since this release: "Idle Chatter Junior" came along in 1999. These tape works have been amusing computer-music aficionados for years; having the first three together at last on this one CD makes for an interesting contrast.

Paul Lansky is an American electroacoustic music composer. He used Linear Predictive Coding, granular synthesis and other stochastic music techniques to make the album More Than Idle Chatter. None of these methods are vocal effects per se, but since we’re on the subject of mind-blowing uses of vocals, I simply had to include More Than Idle Chatter. Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) is a method for speech signal processing used for modelling speech, often used in linguistics. Producing his piece in the 90s, Lansky used a DEC MicroVAX II – a computer that has become obsolete. Today, achieving granular synthesis can be done with tools like Ableton’s Granulator. Cher – Believe (1998).

More Than Idle Chatter. More Than Idle Chatter.

Lansky's first album, Smalltalk, was not released until 1990. It features four tracks, two covering aspects of the human voice, and two looking at two styles of music (metal and harmonica). His second album, Homebrew (1992), contains five tracks, including the percussive and aural 18-minute piece "Table's Clear," which features samples of his children playing kitchen utensils. Following that came More Than Idle Chatter, the six compositions of which focus on processings of the human voice using linear predictive coding, granular synthesis, and plucked string synthesis; its.

Idle Chatter, just more idle chatter, and, er are three sister pieces which explore the same territory from different points of view. They are not intended as a suite, and would probably be exhausting to listen to as such - which is why they are not placed consecutively on this disc - but as three distinct and different pieces which happen to have a lot in common. Idle Chatter was created on an IBM 3081 mainframe in 1985. just more idle chatter and er were made on a DEC MicroVaxII in 1987 and 1988, respectively. All three & pieces use a technique known as Linear Predictive Coding, granular synthesis and a variety of stochastic mixing techniques.
