Acclaimed South African artist Robin Rhode has collaborated with The Vinyl Factory to release his first vinyl record.

In 2015 Robin Rhode was the Artistic Director of the first-ever live production of an opera in Times Square: Arnold Schönberg's Erwartung – A Performance by Robin Rhode; conducted by Arturo Tamayo, and produced in partnership with Performa. The soprano Carole Sidney Louis performed solo on a minimal stage created from printed sketches by Rhode, amidst the sky high buildings and billboards standing in for the dense forest illuminated only by moonlight that the opera is set i. .Produced by Rhode with arrangements by Arenor Anuku, Variants is the soundtrack to six short films created by the artist for his show at White Cube, London in 2011.

STEVENSON presents Robin Rhode’s Recycled Matter, his first solo exhibition at the gallery’s Johannesburg space. The exhibition takes its title. The film also features Rhode’s long-time musical collaborators Arenor Anuku and drum soloist Marcel van Cleef. In Recycled Matter André mimes his journey through a range of wall-drawn and theatrical environments, interacting with props and sculptural elements that are remnants of previous artworks taken from Rhode’s studio.

Robin Rhode was 13, maybe 14, years old. A formidable year surely as most everyone’s is, but particularly during this time as the region was on the cusp of a revolution. He participated closely in the subculture that developed, as subcultures do, partly out of circumstance and partly out of necessity. While educators put their tools down, students picked the chalk up, stole it even, to draw on walls, to fill in where they had been failed, to create imagined worlds or objects, simple and spirited.
