Richard Pierce "Richie" Havens (January 21, 1941 – April 22, 2013) was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. His music encompassed elements of folk, soul, and rhythm and blues. He had an intense and rhythmic guitar style (often in open tunings), played soulful covers of pop and folk songs, and opened at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. Born in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, Havens was the oldest of nine children.
Beinahe mehr noch als mit eigenen Songs bestach Richie Havens mit Varianten fremder Stücke. Einer seiner bekanntesten Titel ist das ursprünglich von Lamont Dozier stammende 'Going Back To My Roots'. Eben eine solche Interpretation begründete auch Havens Ruhm in der breiten Öffentlichkeit. 1969 durfte er das Woodstock-Festival eröffnen und spielte so lange, bis ihm die Lieder ausgingen.
