Violens head Jorge Elbrecht put together an interesting Winter Mixtape, turning Xasthur (RIP) into pop, mashing My Bloody Valentine with the Byrds, covering Wire and Saint Etienne, etc. Things are somewhat sunnier (but still chillier and, in fact, chillwavier) on this Summer Mixtape that includes Unrest, Dead Can Dance, Chapterhouse, and Summoning covers; reworked Washed Out, Delorean, and Nite Jewel; and, among other things, Justin Bieber. Violens' forthcoming album, "True," finds the Brooklyn three-piece further amplifying their innovative songwriting with a palette of exquisitely crafted sound. The band's music eludes classification, expertly blending percussive guitar work and silky harmonies, seeking the silver lining yet to be discovered between the sounds we know and love. With a wash of 90s sonic pop drawn from artists like Pale Saints, Cocteau Twins and McCarthy, Violens paint soft watercolor notes across their compositions, adding crucial emotional depth via layered vocal harmonies.

This week: a premiere from Jorge Elbrecht, the man behind Lansing-Dreiden and Violens, the return of Total Control, long-awaited Brainiac vinyl reissues, new Melbourne band RVG, and a look back at Carl Newman's pre-New Pornographer's past.
