The second half of this half-hour (way too short) program is given over to newcomer vocalist Arthur Prysock who is joined by (I am 90% certain) Horace Silver on piano and possibly Art Blakey on drums. This was the opening show of the series from September 4, 1952. Considering how radio used to broadcast these get-togethers weekly, it’s difficult to imagine them being taken for granted, but this was a typical Tuesday night, coast-to-coast. Man, things have changed.

Howard McGhee (born March 6, 1918, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA - died July 17, 1987, New York City, New York, USA) was one of the very first bebop jazz trumpeters, together with Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro and Idrees Sulieman. He was known for lightning-fast fingers and very high notes. What is generally not known is the influence that he had on younger hard bop trumpeters, together with Fats Navarro. Howard McGhee was raised in Detroit. During his career, he played in bands led by Lionel Hampton, Andy Kirk, Count Basie and Charlie Barnet. Howard McGhee was the one that brought bebop in California. Coleman Hawkins Quintet, Roy Eldridge, Howard Mc Ghee - Live Recording At The "Birdland" New York, September 1952 ‎(LP, Album).
