Dweezil Zappa’s new album – Via Zammata’ features him playing Fretless Guitar, Glissentar and Oud in what is certainly his best album to date. Dweezil Zappa’s father, Frank Zappa also played Fretless Guitar and it is really hard when a famous musician’s son comes to create his own music. Inevitably there are comparisons and that is just the way things work. You can hear the father, son influences but that is not a bad thing as Dweezil is one hell of a good guitarist and musician, you only have to listen to this album to verify that statement.

Dweezil Zappa (born Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa; September 5, 1969) is an American rock guitarist and occasional actor. He is the son of musical composer and performer Frank Zappa. Exposed to the music industry from an early age, Dweezil developed a strong affinity for playing the guitar and producing music. Able to learn directly from guitarists such as Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen, Dweezil released his first single (produced by Eddie Van Halen) at the age of 12.

So the challenge for Dweezil Zappa on Via Zammata', his first new solo album in nearly a decade, was straddling the line between his Zappa Plays Zappa endeavors and his own artistic identity. This record is a chance to take what I've learned over the past decade of learning my dad's music and playing it live and applying some of those elements to my own music - but I didn't want to do it in a way that made the music seem like just a derivative of my dad's music," Zappa.

Only for completionists (8%). It delighted me when I discovered that Dweezil was working on a new album, and happily contributed to the online funding site for it. And it certainly paid off well. Dweezil used his ZPZ musicians as the core group for this album, so the technical ability is top notch. Anyone expecting this to be a clone of Frank's work may come away disappointed. Although Dweezil uses many of the techniques his dad employed to embellish and energize his music, he definitely has his own unique personal vision and style.
