This is a small tribute slideshow to Mister Robertson.
How to Become Clairvoyant is the fifth solo release from Canadian singer-musician Robbie Robertson. The album features guests Eric Clapton (on tracks 3-8 and 10), Steve Winwood, Trent Reznor (who provided textures on the track "Madame X"), Tom Morello, Robert Randolph, Rocco Deluca, Angela McCluskey, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes.
How to Become Clairvoyant is Robbie Robertson's first album since 1998's Contact from the Underworld of Red Boy. In the interim, he served as musical director for some Martin Scorsese films, produced soundtracks, and worked as an A&R man for Dreamworks. Co-produced by Robertson and Marius de Vries, the 12-song set boasts an impressive guest list. Eric Clapton makes seven appearances on guitar, duets on "Fear of Falling," co-wrote three tunes, and contributed an instrumental ("Madame X," which is minimally but beautifully textured by Trent Reznor).

How to Become Clairvoyant is Robbie Robertson's first album since Contact from the Underworld of Redboy in 1998. The new album was co-produced by Robertson and Marius de Vries (Massive Attack, Bjφrk, and Rufus Wainwright). The set was recorded over two years in London and Los Angeles. There was a long break in the sessions when Robertson answered director Martin Scorsese's call to work on the music for the film Shutter Island. Robertson wrote eight of the album's 12 tunes, and co-wrote three with Eric Clapton (who appears on both guitar and vocals) and one with de Vries.
On How to Become Clairvoyant, Robertson's first solo CD in ten years, he sings, "I do not play, no rock and roll," in that distinctive, whispering growl that sounds as if it's simmering just a half notch below bursting. It's a repeated claim in the opening cut, "Straight Down the Line," words from the mouths of story teller Robertson's characters: an old bluesman in a striped suit, a black-robed gospel choir singer. Personnel: Robbie Robertson: guitar, keyboards, vocals; Dana Glover: backing vocals (1, 11); Robert Randolph: pedal steel guitar (1, 11); Pino Pallindino: bass; Ian Thomas: drums; Angela McCluskey: vocal (2); Angleyna Boyd: backing vocals (2, 4, 5); Daryl Johnson: backing vocals (2, 3, 5); Rocco Deluca: backing vocals (2, 3, 5, 7, 9).

Erstwhile leader of The Band, Jaime Royal ‘Robbie’ Robertson has enjoyed a curiously disjointed solo career since taking leave of the influential Canadian quintet in 1976. A smattering of studio and film production work, a couple of soundtracks and four inconsistent solo albums have all failed to match the heights the 20-something Torontonian achieved in penning classics like The Weight or The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Yet the enduring pervasiveness of such songs will guarantee him iconic status to the grave.
Album · 2011 · 13 Songs. Robertson’s voice, always a limited animal, is used for maximum effect, adding an earthy midnight growl to these expertly played tunes that are pure professionalism. There’s a solid R&B groove working through The Right Mistake with Winwood on the Hammond B-3. A strong blues bite kicks up the dust for He Don’t Live Here No More and Fear of Falling.
