9 is the seventh and latest studio album by Danish heavy metal band Mercyful Fate. 9 was recorded during February and March 1999, and was released on June 15, 1999, on Metal Blade Records. This album continues the heavier sound that was introduced in their previous album Dead Again, and also marks the return of the Satanic- and occult-based lyrical themes which were prevalent during the band's first incarnation, as the primary lyrical focus. All lyrics written by King Diamond.

Melissa (Mercyful Fate album). did not leave Mercyful Fate time for a sound check and for properly set up their equipment. Manowar's sound engineer even tampered with Mercyful Fate's soundboard during their performance, which was reduced from 45 minutes to 25. Manowar refused to comply to Mercyful Fate and Roadrunner's request for better treatment, which forced the band to leave the tour with great financial loss to themselves, not to mention disappointment of their British fans. Mercyful Fate is an influential heavy metal band that formed in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1981 from the remaining members of Hank Shermann's band Brats and King Diamond's band Black Rose. In early 1981 they helped out Michael Denner with demos for his band Danger Zone. Soon, Shermann, Denner, Diamond, and Denner's bass player Timi Grabber realized their potential as a unit and started performing as Mercyful Fate.

Although the following story is entirely fictional, details in it reflect the time period in which the album was released while other details reflect my thoughts while listening to the album). November of 1982 is a month I will never forget. In fact, I remember it like it was yesterday. It was nighttime, and I had just walked home after going to the record store.

I associate Mercyful Fate with fast tempos, high energy and powerful vocals, none of which are prominent in this release. The song structures are almost pop-like and stale compared to the progressive nature of early Fate. To any metal head, this album will be a good listen, but to the avid Fate listener, this will be tough to warm to. To be honest, 9 was the first Mercyful Fate album I purchased. I’d heard a few of their songs and liked them so I thought it was time I get one of their albums.
