Bookends is the fourth studio album by American music duo Simon & Garfunkel. Produced by Paul Simon, Roy Halee and Art Garfunkel, the album was released on April 3, 1968, in the United States by Columbia Records. The duo had risen to fame two years prior with the albums Sounds of Silence and Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme and the soundtrack album for the 1967 film The Graduate.

Simon & Garfunkel: Bookends. Bookends is an aptly-titled literary album covering themes of loss, the American Dream, youthful innocence and old age. Released in 1968, it was an ambitious work that gave rise to classic tracks including America, Old Friends, Fakin’ It, A Hazy Shade Of Winter, and At The Zoo. The album was later remastered and reissued in 2001 with the additional tracks You Don’t Know Where Your Interest Lies and a demo version of Old Friends.

Simon & Garfunkel quietly slipped Bookends, their fourth album, into the bins with a whisper in March 1968. They are equal collaborators with producer/engineer Roy Halee in a multivalently layered song cycle observing the confusion of those seeking an elusive American Dream, wistfully reflecting on innocence lost forever to the cold winds of change. Bookends opens with an acoustic guitar stating a theme, slowly and plaintively. It erupts into the musical dissonance that introduces "Save the Life of My Child. Simon & Garfunkel never overstate; instead they observe, almost journalistically, enormous life and cultural questions in the process of them being asked.

The fact that Bookends wasn't overshadowed by S&G's crowning achievement Bridge Over Troubled Water, which came along a year later, gives an idea of this record's impressive stature. Fakin' It" is one of the bouncy pop gems on the album, complete with classic Simon & Garfunkel foot-tapping acoustic guitars and handclaps. There is even a shadow of things to come in the duo's career here, as horns are briefly heard in the arrangement before the song turns to a slightly strange (and very brief) skit and back to the catchy chorus before falling into a strangely marshal rhythm piece.

Collected Works (Simon and Garfunkel album). Collected Works is the first box set released by Simon & Garfunkel in 1981. It contains all five of their albums: Wednesday Morning, 3 . Sounds of Silence, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, Bookends, and Bridge over Troubled Water. Originally released in 1981 as a 5-LP box set, it was reissued as a 3-CD set in 1990.

Listen to Simon & Garfunkel's 'Bookends'. For starters, the duo was thinking in terms of albums rather than singles at this point. Up until then, they pretty much had made their name with a series of Top 40 singles (three of them, in fact, ended up on Bookends).
