Milton Nascimento was born in Rio de Janeiro. His mother, Maria Nascimento, was a maid. As a baby, Nascimento was adopted by a couple who were his mother's former employers; Josino Brito Campos, a bank employee, mathematics teacher and electronic technician and Lília Silva Campos, a music teacher and choir singer. In 1963, he moved to Belo Horizonte, where his friendship with Lô Borges led to the Clube da Esquina ("street corner club") movement. One composition was "Canção do Sal", which was first interpreted by Elis Regina in 1966 and led to a television appearance with Nascimento. The collective, as well as some others, released Clube da Esquina in 1972

Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges, both renowned masters of the Clube da Esquina (in English "Corner Club") movement, wrote and performed several pieces together. The most remarkeable fruit of their collaborative labour has to be the double-album "Clube da Esquina" (originally released on EMI Odeon, 1972), named after the particular post-bossa nova style, which Nascimento, Lô Borges, Márcio Borges, Fernando Brant, Ronaldo Bastos .

Clube Da Esquina (Club on the Corner) is one of Brazil's most important albums. Remaining true to Brazilian music, the album also had influences from Paul McCartney, Procol Harum and Stevie Wonder, and had a focus on vocals. The album was composed over six months in Piratininga, north of Rio. Clube Da Esquina took Brazilian music somewhere new with touches of music from Chile and Paraguay.

A classic double LP recorded in 1972 by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges, the album had orchestrations from Eumir Deodato and Wagner Tiso under the conduction of the renowned /orchestrator Paulo Moura. The title Clube da Esquina is related to the gang of mineiros (people from the Minas Gerais state) that populate this release, either singing compositions or vocal/instrumental performances, like Nascimento and Borges themselves: Wagner Tiso, Beto Guedes, Milton Guedes, Tavito, Toninho Horta, Márcio Borges, Ronaldo Bastos, and Fernando Brant, among others.
