Crippled Black Phoenix's debut album (the first in a planned trilogy) follows suit with a collection of apocalyptic hymns. There are flashes of salvation: "The Northern Cobbler" sets a Tennyson ballad, spoken in its original Lincolnshire dialect, against a languid, optimistic post-rock crescendo. The poem finds an alcoholic cobbler hitting rock bottom, then kicking the bottle and regaining his societal standing. But moments of uplift like this are few and far between, and the bulk of the album is taken up by a lugubrious plod. The album is at its best when it plays into it.
Performer – Andy Semmens, Dominic Aitchison, Joe Volk, Justin Greaves, Kostas Panagiotou, Nial McGaughey. Producer – Geoff Barrow, Stuart Matthews. Released in a 6-panel Digipak with a 16-page booklet. Recorded & mixed at State Of Art Studio, 2006 . Track 4 titled "Suppose I Told The Truth (Why I had To Go)" in the booklet, and "Suppose I Told The Truth" on the cover.
Psychedelic Rock Crippled Black Phoenix. Band Name Crippled Black Phoenix.
This debut album from Crippled Black Phoenix runs into the same problem that many other debut albums do, it is released at a point when the band is still trying to find their sound. After countless listens, this album still has me wondering to myself "What is trying to be accomplished here?" There are some straightforward rockers, there is a good 20 minute stretch of ambient noodling, and there are some vocals, chants and rollicking choruses.
