Pieces of You is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Jewel, released on February 28, 1995 by Atlantic Records. It was produced by Ben Keith, who has also produced works for artists such as Neil Young and Patsy Cline. Featuring acoustic guitar-based songs written when Kilcher was a teenager, the album is composed of both live recordings from 1994 at The Innerchange, a coffeehouse in San Diego, and studio recordings completed at Neil Young's personal studio in Redwood City, California.

Jewel's debut album, Pieces of You, reveals a special voice-strong and focused on both the whispery verses and the hooky choruses. The recording also exposes an unfortunate tendency to present trite, hackneyed sentiments as if they were oracular visions from a young prophet to a jaded world. For the most part, Jewel sings to her own acoustic guitar accompaniment, but she has a lot more in common with, say, the Indigo Girls or Lisa Loeb than with Judy Collins or Nanci Griffith.

Pieces of You is an appropriately titled album because it touches on so many of the fundamental emotions that we experience throughout life. The title track is saturated with jealousy and passionate hatred, as Jewel sings abhorrently about the shallowness of women in our society, along with a lack of tolerance for homosexuals and Jews.

20 years ago, Jewel Kilcher – the Kilcher is silent – released her debut album, Pieces of You, to general indifference. Not that it didn’t eventually go platinum 12 times over, of course, but if you look back at Jewel’s chart history, you can see how the Pieces of You story unfolds, and it’s a considerably longer tale than you might’ve realized.
