CD - Original Jazz Classics. Although from different generations, tenor-saxophonist Zoot Sims and trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison both always liked to swing, making their successful collaboration on this CD reissue not much of a surprise. With assistance from pianist Roger Kellaway (who doubles on Fender Rhodes), bassist John Heard and drummer Jimmie Smith, the two veterans jam on seven standards and Edison's "A Little Tutu. The results are predictable but colorful and inventive within the boundaries of the idiom.

Lyrics for Just Friends by Zoot Sims & Harry "Sweets" Edison. Just friends, lovers no more Just friends, but not like before To think of what we've been and not to kiss again Seems like pretending it isn't the ending Two friends drifting apart Two friends, but one broken heart We loved, we laughed, we cried, and suddenly love died. Writer(s): Sam M. Lewis, John Klenner, Sam Lewis.

This might not win any awards for innovation or urgency, but as one might expect when Zoot Sims (sax) and Sweets Edison (trumpet) meet, this is a thoroughly enjoyable bop meeting...a quintet with Roger Kellaway on piano (electric and acoustic), John Heard on bass and Jimmie Smith on drums...the rhythm section moving along wonderfully, relaxed and pronounced...the horn players respecting each other and the compositions but of course filling in the standards with their own personalities...kick back in the basement or on the back porch or on the couch in your baby's arms and enjoy this date from December 1978. Produced by Norman Granz, engineered by Val Valentin.
