As the frontman of UB40 with a very distinctive voice and style, Ali Campbell was used to both original songs and covers, and there were a few of both on Running Free, his second solo album but his first without his bandmates in 12 years. He wasn't on his own, however, recruiting some friends and well respected musicians to duet with him on several of the tracks; most of them are namechecked on the album cover. Johnny Nash had already put a light reggae beat to his original hit "Hold Me Tight" as far back as 1968, and Campbell does not change much on his version 39 years later.

Former UB40 frontman Ali Campbell's 'Running Free' LP takesa distinctly collaborative approach, featuring guest appearances from a whole host of pop talent. As founding members of Britain’s biggest reggae band UB40, singer Ali Campbell, second vocalist Astro and keyboardist Mickey Virtue topped the UK singles chart on three occasions and sold 70 million records as they took their smooth yet rootsy musical blend to all corners of the globe. Now with A Real Labour Of Love the trio give us a fresh take on the legendary series of albums, putting the focus primarily on reggae tracks from the 1980s. The first three albums featured the songs we grew up listening to, says Ali Campbell.

Ali Campbell has one of the UK’s most distinctive and recognisable voices. As lead singer with the world-renowned group UB40, Ali Campbell has sold over 60 million records worldwide, toured across the globe, notched up four number No. 1 world-wide singles, over 40 Top 40 UK singles, released 18 studio albums and received an Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement. At this years Grammy awards UB40 were nominated for best reggae album, for their most recent album released in 2006  . A whole generation has grown up listening to Ali’s infectious vocals on classics like One in Ten, Red Red Wine, Don’t Break My Heart and Can’t Help Falling In Love. Ali has stayed true to his love of reggae and its ongoing capacity for innovation.

In October 2007, Campbell released a solo album entitled Running Free. It entered the UK charts at number 9 and went gold. This was the first top ten entry for Campbell for a new studio album since UB40s Labour of Love 3 album, which was released 10 years prior to Running Free. On 24 January 2008, it was reported that Campbell was to quit the group after almost 30 years. Campbell, who was a founding member of UB40, songwriter and lead vocalist who sang on hits such as "Red, Red Wine", finally quit the band in 2008. On 18 October 2010 Ali released his fourth solo album Great British Songs-a collection of British pop and rock hits from the 1960s and 1970s. The album reached 15 on the UK Albums Chart where it remained for three weeks.
