Vinegar Joe were fronted by the vocal talents of Robert Palmer and Elkie Brooks, who formed the band after the demise of the experimental Jazz rockists, Dada. The album was originally released in 1972 on Island Records. The CD booklet features sleeve notes and UK discography, including images of the three albums that the band released before their split in 1973. Great early 70s rock here with a bit of a bluesy touch to it, this band was very british sounding and had a lot to offer at this time, the remastering on this cd is great and i had not heard this album in over 20 years now. Vinegar Joe was a British R&B band in the early 1970s. The core members were lead singers Elkie Brooks and Robert Palmer, Steve York bass, and Pete Gage, guitar. Other members included Mike Deacon, Dave Thompson, John Hawken & Tim Hinkley keyboards, Jim Mullen guitar, Pete Gavin, John Woods & Keef Hartley, drums. This R&B based rock outfit was the launching pad for the careers of Elkle Brooks and Robert Palmer. Formed with much encouragement from Island Records boss Chris Blackwell, it rose from the ashes of short-lived jazz-rock combo Dada

Vinegar Joe were the first band this writer ever saw live, in the exotic environs of Slough Community Centre. They made quite an impression. Elkie Brooks – belying her present-day, soft-focus MOR image – was raunch’n’roll personified, a thigh-thrustin’ hybrid of Janis Joplin and Tina Turner. Robert Palmer was, by contrast, the ultra-coolest of cats. A smooth operator who sashayed around barely breaking a sweat while his bandmate stomped, shrieked and hollered like a she-devil. Brooks and Palmer were polar opposites but their onstage relationship was pure dynamite. Yin, yang, thank you, ma’am. Elkie Brooks believes Robert Palmer had his whole solo thing mapped out a good year before he told us he was going to leave. It absolutely broke my heart when Vinegar Joe disbanded. Palmer released his debut album, Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley, in September 1974, kicking off a hugely successful solo career. Ten years later – despite his reputation for not being a ‘band person’ – he joined supergroup the Power Station, made up of members of Duran Duran and Chic. Robert was a predator and Duran Duran were hot, says Gage.

great songs and playing. Elkie Brooks vocals are awesome and diverse, but interplay between her and Palmer sets the album apart. Vinegar Joe, Six Star General  . It was doomed from the start as it was released during the "vinyl crisis" of the 70's. The first pressings sold out fast but then there were no more pressed for a long time

With Elkie Brooks on vocals, Robert Palmer on guitar and vocals, Pete Gage (guitars, piano) and Steve York (bass, harmonica) at the core of the group, and numerous musicians on drums and keyboards the band recorded three albums between 1971 and 1973. Six Star General" the last Vinegar Joe album clearly has been pulled from a vinyl version for at least half the tracks here (track 1 which has a pop towards the conclusion of the song and tracks 7-10 which have surface noise evident).

Vinegar is a music studio album recording by VINEGAR (e Rock) released in 1971 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. VINEGAR JOE Self Titled UK '70s Rock RnB Lp AUSTRALIA Robert Palmer Elkie Brooks.
