Traversing a wide span of recordings – from Ernest Ansermet, cheeky in the overtures, to Sutherland and Crespin in voices thrilling and beguiling for the arias, this compendium offers not only the Offenbach ‘hits’ (including the Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffman, both as an orchestral interlude as well as a duet), but several delightful rarities, performed by top-shelf. Long out of print, the CD is now restored to circulation - - Tracklisting: OFFENBACH Les Contes d’Hoffmann 1 Barcarolle 2 Doll Song 3 Va, pour Kleinzach. l était une fois à la . .Régine Crespin, soprano Plácido Domingo, tenor Sumi Jo, soprano Joan Sutherland, soprano Huguette Tourangeau, mezzo-soprano Ernest Ansermet Richard Bonynge Alain Lombard. The cast, with Plácido Domingo in the title role and Joan Sutherland playing all three heroines in the flashbacks, has long made this recording a first-choice Hoffmann among some critics. But Domingo lacks the ideal vocal elegance, and having three different personalities as the heroines can be much more interesting. This recording does have some famous French character singers in its favor-Hugues Cuénod and Gabriel Bacquier-but this may be mostly for Sutherland fans. -David Patrick Stearns. Joan Sutherland was in prime voice then (about 1973, or so), and was absolutely stunning. The gorgeous Barcarolle from the beginning of Act II sung by Sutherland as Giulietta and Huguette Tourangeau as Niklaus fulfilled every dream I may have had about the music. I still love this production, and find it as bright and pleasant as it was 41 years ago. Highly Recommended. This is definitely one of Sutherland's best recordings, along with the Lucia Di Lammermoor she made with Pavarotti. Tourangeau is very good too. Domingo is good (I heard him perform it live in San Francisco in 1987).
