September Gurls was originally released in 1984, as a mini album, bringing together as yet undiscovered songs from Big Star, The Shoes and The Clones, together with Meynell originals to create an amalgam of powerful jangle guitar lead pop and celebration of classic pop songwriting. The album has been extended, true to style with five songs from the original 1984 collection of demos, and recorded following the same template of live in the studio performance using analogue equipment to capture the energy and emotion

Anthony Meynell decided to give it another try when he started his own label, Hi-Lo in 1981. The first release was Hits from 3000 Years Ago, a collection of demos and leftovers from the original Squire lineup. He reactivated the band, adding Jon Bicknell on bass, and releasing a new single, "No Time for Tomorrow," in 1982. They never made the breakthrough into the mainstream, but the album and its follow-up EP, September Gurls, (the title track was a cover of the Big Star classic) in 1984 became cult classics in American power pop circles. Squire began preparation for their next album, Smash, but decided to call it quits before its completion.

This is Squire, the groovy mod trio fronted by Anthony Meynell, one of pop music's unsung heroes. Spanning the years 1980-1984, this exceptional compilation concentrates on the latter half of the band's career, and contains almost their entire Get Smart album. When Meynell puts down his pen and records a cover version (including Shoes' "Boys Don't Lie" and Big Star's "September Gurls"), the results are nothing less than Squire-like. Sadly, the only low point on this disc is the A-side of their fan club-only final single, "The Young Idea," which, strangely enough, was probably considered a high point when first released!

Fronted by Anthony Meynell, Squire released two fantastic singles for Arista - "Walking Down The Kings Road", with anthemic "Its A Mod, Mod World" on the flip side, and "Face Of Youth Today", and a fourth "My Mind Goes Round In Circles" featured Kirsty MacColl on vocals. Squire went on to record five albums and ten singles, including the sunshine pop album "Get Smart" in 1983, and the groundbreaking "September Gurls" album in 1984, the title track a cover of Big Star’s then undiscovered classic. Map Islington Assembly Hall, Upper St,.

While briefly retiring the Squire name, Meynell issued this album of unreleased tracks under his own name in 1981. Once again, the songs are top-notch odes to his '60s influences. Once again, the songs are top-notch odes to his ’60s influences. While The Singles Album is a varied collection of songs, Hits from 3000 Years Ago is a far more cohesive album. The songs are filled with an excitement and wild-eyed innocence that may not get punk enthusiasts excited, but mod fans and power pop fans will eat this up with gusto and passion. It’s sugar sweet and ballsy enough to crank up loud while cruising down Main Street on a Saturday night and not be embarrassed about.
