A lush studio recording of Turkish sufi music, it was made during a 1978 tour by the "Whirling Dervishes" troupe. Originally a two-LP set, this tape presents over 80 minutes of ritual chanting, soothing nay flute improvisations, and evocative instrumental interludes. As with the best spiritual music, these sounds have a unique ability to carry the listener away to mystical lands.

Whirling Dervishes are an American alternative rock band from Westfield, New Jersey. Formed in 1981 initially as Johnny Bravo and his Whirling Dervishes, the band shortened its name in 1983 to Whirling Dervishes. Their sound has been described as a combination of Roxy Music, The Stooges, Nine Inch Nails and The Wonderstuff. Dazzo, Ardrey, Paola and Siegel met while attending Westfield High School while Heer and Bryan studied at neighboring Union Catholic High School.

Having experienced Dervishes here and in Konya I was anxious to get this. I was not disappointed. This truly outstanding album, beautifully recorded in 2007 and with a enclosed blooklet with very good explanatory notes, takes us to a ritual, the ayin, of the Mevlevi Turkish Sufis, which includes the whirling dance. The ensemble of musicians includes tanbur lute, ney flute, kemençe fiddle, cello, bendir frame drums, kanun zither, kadüm kettle drums, and mazhar tambourine. The Gülizar Music Ensemble seems to be performing just in front of the listerner in a large chamber, as we sense some depth from subtle echo.
