To them, Dead Meadow made (I'm paraphrasing from hazy memory) "blunted head-nod shit. And so, for at least a few, the . band's endlessly languid psyche-rock riffage made them functionally pretty similar to, say, Pete Rock. Like Pete Rock, Dead Meadow have spent years working variations on an introverted thump, switching up their endless-repeat rhythmic ebb and flow just enough to stay interesting. Inertia's always been there in the music, but it's never made its presence felt quite as much as it does on Old Growth. And so the album's standout moment is the only one where they show some teeth. 'Till Kingdom Come" is a slow, woozy jam, and nothing immediately sets it apart from anything else here. But then you notice that the central riff is genuinely heavy, that the band seems locked-in and alive.

Album · 2008 · 12 Songs. What with all the punishing riffs and pummeling beats, it sounds as if there’s a very heavy, menacing creature emerging from the woods on the cover of Dead Meadow’s fifth album. On songs like the forceful opener, Ain’t Got Nothing (To Go Wrong), the American trio refine their doomy blend of stoner rock and slow-motion psychedelia. Yet singer/guitarist Jason Simon shows off a gentler side, too: The folky Down Here and Moroccan-influenced Seven Seers both demonstrate Dead Meadow’s more melodic bent. Old Growth Dead Meadow.
I'll be honest, when Dead Meadow's 5th album, Old Growth, dropped in 2008, I was in a completely different mind frame musically speaking. I was playing in a blues rock band and was listening to a lot of older music from the 60's and 70's, so unfortunately, I missed out on this album and didn't really pick it up until a few years later. I did hear a few songs around the time this album came out, and honestly, I didn't really like them. I thought Dead Meadow mellowed out too much and the things that I liked about them were absent on this album. I love the Telecaster sound Jason Simmons gets. I hear he put out a solo album too.
