Picking Elton John 's single greatest album is no easy task. The man worked like a maniac in the early 1970s, releasing 10 albums between 1970 and 1976. Those were his golden years, but he kept going and managed more than a few true creative comebacks in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. Elton John was dangerously close to being an oldies act by 1983. His five albums since 1976's Blue Moves didn't live up to critical or commercial expectations, and his decision to dissolve his original band and work with songwriters other than Bernie Taupin didn't sit well with fans. He corrected all these errors on Too Low For Zero.

John and Bernie Taupin's songwriting had become more immediate and successful; in particular, John's music had become sharper and more diverse, rescuing Taupin's frequently nebulous lyrics. Take Me to the Pilot" might not make much sense lyrically, but John had the good sense to ground its willfully cryptic words with a catchy blues-based melody. Next to the increased sense of songcraft, the most noticeable change on Elton John is the addition of Paul Buckmaster's grandiose string arrangements

Elton John’s album Blue Moves was released on October 22, 1976. It was the second double album that Elton John had released in his career. His first double album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road had only been released three years earlier. The fact that both albums were two record sets was the only real commonality apparent between both records. Well if there ever was an Elton John album that left no doubt over its release date it was Elton John’s 11-17-70 record. However, all kidding aside, the album showed the world just how great a rock and roll piano player Elton John was. The album featured Elton John on piano, Dee Murry on bass, and Nigel Olson on drums. No other instrumentation was utilized on the album. The entire record was performed live in front of a studio audience.
