The Seaside is the third demo album from English rock group Cardiacs. The album originally featured the second recording of what would become the band's only hit single, "Is This the Life?". It is the last of the band's releases to feature keyboard r Mark Cawthra and the first to feature keyboard player William D. Drake (as well as being the only album to feature two other musicians who were briefly Cardiacs members - Graham Simmonds and Marguerite Johnson).

And so, what of On Land And In The Sea? Well, it's a step forward from A Little Man in a sense; the compositions have more moving pieces and shifting tempos (and not just within the same section, either - songs like 'Leader Of The Starry Skies' or 'Fast Robert'd always seem to be moving in some direction). In 1999, the band released Guns, which is actually the most recent Cardiacs album. They've done some stuff since, notably the double live set Garage Concerts, which revamps nearly all their material prior to A Little Man And A House And The Whole World Window. But new material was sparse - their Greatest Hits package included the excellent 'Faster Than Snakes With A Ball And Chain', and in 2007 a 3-song EP called Ditzy Scene appeared, teasing an upcoming double album that was to be called LSD.

The Cardiacs didn't make it easy to like their second album, too happy to let their whirligig of shattered atonal pop come apart at its seams. The band's technique for hoisting a radical thrill out of audience discomfort was pushed to extremes ("Fast Robert," "Baby Heart Dirt") and it suddenly felt forced and phony, like a poor Dadaist trying to make do in a world of Starter jackets and Technotronic

My first taste of the Cardiacs, so I have no idea if this album is really representative of their style, but my guess is yes. I had always thought of The Cardiacs as a punkish group that was a cross of The Jam and The Clash and had sort of of left it at that, since at first glance, this group brought nothing new to what had been said in the late 70's.

Between 1988 and 1989 Cardiacs recorded their album ‘On Land And In The Sea’ at ‘The Slaughterhouse studios’ in Yorkshire. It was released in 1989. Mysteriously, both ‘The Workhouse’ and ‘The Slaughterhouse’ burned down shortly after Cardiacs had finished there. In early 1995 Cardiacs were finally given the go ahead to record an album. The time of their chastisement had come to an end. They were never really sure why they had been so punished, but that time was over and it was now a time for rejoicing!
