Dean Blunt - The Redeemer Everything about Dean Blunt is shrouded in a great puff of obfuscation. Dean Blunt isn't his real name. Hype Williams, the duo he formed with Inga Copeland, is also the name of a famous director, leading the unwary on a wild Google chase. The stories he tells in interviews-about joining the nation of Islam, racoon robbery and so forth-should be taken with a mine of salt. On The Redeemer, his connection to the world of electronic music is more tenuous than ever-its often miniature tracks employ strings, harps, lethargic rhythms and lacy flourishes of piano, accordions and guitar. It all feels very theatrical. These are assemblages, rather than organic pieces.

Dean Blunt has indeed a unique and exquisite aesthetic. His crude voice reaches deep for the listener, mostly due to it's absence in most of the time on The Redeemer. His instrumentals, mostly sampled sound like tools that he manipulates in such a skillful way as well as his most frequent collaborator's voice, Inga Copeland. And he uses all of these tools to craft such off-putting compositions more as an orchestrator than anything else. Even so, Blunt is still a poet of many sorts.
