Johnnie Taylor is not a household name like fellow soul singers Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, but at one time he was the talk of the R&B world. Taylor was Stax Records' biggest-selling artist after Redding died (he was also, incidentally, a pallbearer at Redding's funeral), and his 1968 song "Who's Making Love" was a defining smash, reaching number five on the pop charts and remaining at number one on the R&B charts for three weeks. Taylor is in rousing form on Live at the Summit Club, a Los Angeles show taped in September 1972 and recently released for the very first time on the reactivated Stax label.

With this one sentence, the indefatigable host of Piano Jazz sums up not only a premise of her radio show but also the thrill of jazz artists coming together in the first place

It’s a shame Johnnie Taylor won’t be there with them. Taylor died of a heart attack at Dallas’ Methodist Charlton Hospital in 2000 at age 62. Although he was born in Crawfordsville, Ar. Taylor lived in the Dallas area for many years and was a DJ on Soul 73 KKDA-AM. Whatever the reason, Taylor’s complete Summit Club performance was issued by Stax for the first time last month. Of the many new releases surrounding the label's 50th anniversary, Live at the Summit Club may be the most revelatory thus far. Ironically, the album captures Taylor and his band having an unshakable off night. Throughout the set, Taylor can be heard imploring the rhythm section not to lose the groove. At one point, he even tells the audience, We’ve been dragging all night!

Biography by Steve Huey. The Philosopher of Soul, he possessed one of the finest voices in R&B, one that made him a soul-blues stalwart and lady-killing balladeer.
