Ashes You Leave is a Croatian metal band formed in 1995 who is currently signed to Rock 'n' Growl Records. They have so far released two demos and six full-length studio albums. In 2012 band released their seventh studio album, The Cure for Happiness, through Rock N Growl. Marta Batinić and Luka Petrović at the 2009 INmusic festival. Desperate Existence (full-length, 1999). Ashes You Leave is a Croatian metal band that made the oh-so-common transition from doom/death metal to gothic metal at the end of the 90's. Over the course of their existence, the general characteristics of their style have consisted of lead female vocals, occasional male grunts, semi-heavy riffs that range from slow to mid-tempo, an array of violins, flutes, and keyboards, and a considerably dreary atmosphere. Desperate Existence was the first album to show the band taking a baby step or two further into gothic territories, which they would inevitably engulf their music in around the time of their Fire album.

Ashes You Leave have been around for quite some time, dishing out album after album without much of a following. Desperate Existence’ is a good album but it has its flaws, stagnancy being a critical issue throughout the album. The atmosphere is haunting and at times even downright scary but it has all been done before, and the formula is a bit too simple. Interludes, gimmicky folk instruments, spine-chilling vocals and atmosphere can make up for the lack of creativity in most aspects, deeming this album a worthy listen.
