Description

Washington Square song was included in album "The original Washington Square" (1963). The video scenes are taken from a greek movie "The Dragon" (1956) by Nikos Koundouros. The original dance in the movie is a greek folk dance called "Zeibekiko". The name is derived from Zeibek warriors of Anatolia.

And, unlike many a folk compilation, this is open-minded enough to include material by some of the more commercially oriented folk acts that helped popularize the style on a mass level, like the Kingston Trio, the Rooftop Singers (with their number one single "Walk Right In"), the Limeliters, the Chad Mitchell Trio, and Randy Sparks. Indeed, virtually every major North American performer of the style is represented, even the hard-to-license Bob Dylan (though Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, and James Taylor are not included due to licensing restrictions). 2. He Was a Friend of Mine.

The latest album by Washington-based songwriter and producer Phil Elverum centers on the sickness and death of his wife Geneviève Castrée. The album has an understandably ruminative, somber core. The passing of his wife made Elverum reflect on his own eventual mortality and the often unfairness of death. 12. The Innocence Mission: Sun On The Square The entrancingly beautiful folk-pop that Karen and Don Peris have been releasing for the past three decades under the name The Innocence Mission is a monument to a simpler way. The band’s 11th album, Sun on the Square, starts off lovely and never lets up. Along the way, we get an extended peek into Karen’s evocative wordsmithery, which is heavy with references to the natural world (light of winter, gentle lions, leaves on leaves, darting birds), streaked with color and shot through with an ever-present sense of wonder and exploration.

Washington Square" is a popular instrumental from 1963 by the New York City-based jazz group The Village Stompers. Named after the famous park in New York City, "Washington Square" became a hit single on 23 November 1963, when it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, kept from the summit by Dale and Grace's hit song "I'm Leaving It Up to You" during the week that President Kennedy was assassinated.

The Folk Riot at Washington Square Park – sometimes referred to as the Beatnik Riot – occurred on Sunday, April 9th, 1961 after the Parks Department of that time suppressed performance at the park, musicians fought back, a protest ensued on that date. The police were heavy handed and mass arrests took place resulting in widespread media coverage and further mobilization of the community. Sunday was the big day for the folkies to meet up. In fact, the famous 17 minute film by Dan Drasin about the folk riot is simply named Sunday. The day that it was clear the folk singers had won the right.

Located in front of the Garibaldi statue, the fourth annual Washington Square Park Folk Festival is free and open to the public, and features live music from local performers playing from a variety of genres, including blues, old-time swing, and Son Jarocho (a regional folk style from Veracruz in Mexico). First up at 1 pm are The Down Hill Strugglers with John Cohen of the New Lost City Ramblers. Local: How did you become involved with the Washington Square Park Folk Festival? Harvey: I met Eli Smith, the creator and organizer of the event, through the old-time music scene in NYC. We had done several square dance gigs together when he played with his former band, and I had already done a dance as part of the Brooklyn Folk Festival for him, and had been doing dances elsewhere, including through my own event, the NYC Barn Dance.
