Heartbeat Records, one of Bristols premiere independent labels managed to capture most of this through a series of now highly acclaimed 7"singles (now much sought after by collectors), and with the showcase compilation album Avon Calling, described by John Peel as "the one that sets the standard for any future compilation, not a bad track on it truly superb". He naturally played 2-3 tracks every night for many weeks following its release.
Released in 1979, the legendary Avon Calling compilation showcased some of the key DIY bands on Bristol's music scene. Local musician Simon Edwards formed. The album met with much acclaim and John Peel notably went on to declare the record as truly superb, the compilation that all others should be judged by". Avon Calling 2 re-enters the Heartbeat Records vaults and compiles a revealing follow-up collection featuring hidden gems from bands such as Europeans, Social Security, Apartment, The Directors, Essential Bop and other such post-punk and proto-indie acts.
