Lady Sings the Blues is the soundtrack to the Billie Holiday biopic of the same name, which starred Diana Ross in her screen debut in 1972. The album became Ross' 4th album (eventually selling over 2,000,000 US copies), though the only one as a solo artist, on the . Top 200 Billboard Albums Chart as a solo act, going to on the . Billboard R&B Album Chart, and on the UK Albums Chart. It was certified gold on the UK for sales of over 100,000 copies.

Sonically, the new album continues in the subtle yet hypnotizing electro-pop vein of Lady Wood, with standouts like the bemusingly titled ows" pulsing and unfolding in the most bouncy way possible. But if that album was an open exploration on the highs and lows of love, Blue Lips is an all-out explosion before the final comedown.
Lady Wood featured 12 tracks, including "Influence" featuring Wiz Khalifa. She told Billboard at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards that the album title referred to "a female hard-on" and "everything that I've been through the past two years has been very intense since this whole artist thing started. With Blue Lips to be the second part of Lady Wood, fans can presumably expect music along the same theme. She did unveil the album artwork, though, and it's as raunchy as any Tove Lo fan would want.
