Walter Hamor Piston Jr, (January 20, 1894 – November 12, 1976), was an American composer of classical music, music theorist, and professor of music at Harvard University. Piston was born in Rockland, Maine at 15 Ocean Street to Walter Hamor Piston, a bookkeeper, and Leon Stover. He was the second of four children.

In some ways Piston was the dean of American music. But as a result of his intellect and his association with the university environment, he was considered to be a somewhat dull, academic composer. Walter Piston was an American composer of the first half of the 20th century who began his work life as an architectural draftsman, played in dance bands, and finished life as a tenured professor at Harvard. In between, he composed about 30 major works including eight symphonies. The present disc includes Piston's Symphony No. 4, Serenata for Orchestra, and Three New England Sketches performed by Gerard Schwartz and the Seattle Symphony and New York Chamber Symphony (Serenata) on the Delos label. Schwartz and the Seattle Symphony give each work a credible performance with brighter sound that RCA afforded Slatkin in his Symphony 6. The same is true for the Sketches.

Walter Piston's Second Symphony was written in 1943 and received its first performance on 5th March 1944.
