Playing dark but sadly beautiful folk-influenced indie rock, the Columbus, Ohio-based Black Swans were initially centered around the core trio of guitarist and singer Jerry DeCicca, violinist Noel Sayre. ead Full Biography.
The Black Swans' new album will be released in late April 2011. The setting was Brian's garage (as featured on the cover), who took over on drums so Keith could focus on engineering the recording. Our plan was to record the album live, with minimal overdubs, over the course of 3 days. Get in, get out. Jerry got his first serious case of food poisoning the night before recording commenced. While the rest of the band drank beer and grilled, he drank warm water and ate Saltines. Otherwise, it was happy times for all. We expected a quick live recording to yield an album that would be easy to mix and might even see a release that year, quick on the heels of 2007's Change!.
Lyrics sailed past pitch-black into some deeper, darker void of nastiness. The music was supposed to hurt. This was NYC in the early ’80s. In its earliest incarnation, Swans set out to inflict itself upon the listener –- violation and domination set to post-punk sludge, meant to break you down, bend you over, and tear right through.
Black Swans: Stories has been added to your Cart. The subject of these nine stories by Babitz (Sex and Rage) is Hollywood: brilliant and beautiful couples who somehow get along; charming yet moody men and their odd needs; and "Eve," the narrator, who cautiously reveals in herself the vices of a naughty but not really bad girl. Reading Black Swans was similar to the reading experiences I have when finishing a Joan Didion book. Give me all the didion. I felt the same after closing Black Swans. There is something remarkable about reading a collection of essays like the ones in Black Swans.
Album Who Will Walk in the Darkness with You? Black Swan Blues Lyrics. When I hold you I hold something good When I see you I see something good. So tell me why Do I have to let you go? Tell me why Do I have to let you go? Your hand, your hand Inside of mine Feels so good It's a lullaby. So tell me why Do I have to let go? Tell me why Do I have to let you go? (The hummingbird: Hmmmms).

The Black Swans have never been afraid to let their freak flag fly, standing in a long line of country and folk eccentrics like Lee Hazlewood, Iris DeMent and Merle Haggard (two of whom get shout-outs on this album). For more contemporary counterparts, you could look to Lambchop, Richard Buckner or Will Oldham, perhaps, but the the polarizing, hoarse-whisperer voice of The Black Swans’ Jerry DeCicca has no obvious analog. The band’s last album, Words are Stupid, found DeCicca substituting animal sounds-rooster crows, monkey screeches-for words.
