Leval Alphonso Thompson (born 12 October 1954, Kingston, Jamaica), known as Linval Thompson, is a Jamaican reggae and dub musician and record producer. Thompson was raised in Kingston, Jamaica, but spent time with his mother in Queens, New York, and his recording career began around the age of 20 with the self-released "No Other Woman," recorded in Brooklyn, New York. Returning to Jamaica in the mid 1970s he recorded with Phil Pratt, only to return to New York to study engineering

Linval Thompson gets a massive retrospective courtesy of Trojan with Don't Cut Off Your Dreadlocks, collecting 47 tracks from his strongest years as a writer and vocalist, 1975 to 1981. A little of Thompson's Rasta militancy goes a long way, and it can be a little tiring listening to track after track outside of the single format that many of these numbers were made for. Ten dub tracks are included as well, and while they are sequenced after their vocal counterparts (in the tradition of discomixes and showcase albums), track separation makes them less than seamless. Thankfully, landmark King Tubby dubs like "Jamaican Colley Version" retain all of their power.

Linval Thompson's musical gifts were recognized early in his life when he began writing songs as a teenager. He made his first recording while living with his mother in New York. The composition "There Is No Other Woman" was a collaboration with future Third World guitarist Bunny Ruggs. Returning to Kingston, Thompson began working at Lee "Scratch" Perry's legendary Black Ark studios under producer Phil Pratt: subsequently contributing to the Upsetter classic "Kung Fu Ma. Linval Thompson – Fussing & Fighting. It seems Linval Thompson has returned to his singer’s chair. Towards the end of the month March there was the release of the reggae veteran’s 10″ vinyl single Whom Shall I Fear by A-Lone Productions outta Spain, which turned out to be the forerunner of a soon to be released Showcase album. The riddim that underpins Fussing & Fighting was recorded and mixed at the Med Tone recording studio with analog tape machine and vintage gear that can reproduce the original sounds from the golden age of reggae music.
