The album was the ultimate test to see if the former Supremes frontwoman could make it as a solo act. This album was written and produced by longtime Ross collaborators Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson and marked her return to Top 40 radio based on the strength of the title track, which peaked on the pop singles chart, and on the US R&B Chart. In addition all the LP tracks went to on the dance charts, and peaked. Ivo Del Prado remixed the bass-heavy "Once in the Morning" which is a very difficult promotional-only to find.

It followed Ross' starring role in the Berry Gordy-directed Mahogany. That film's theme, a sweeping Gerry Goffin/Michael Masser ballad sung by Ross, topped Billboard's Adult Contemporary and Hot 100 charts; though it appeared on the Mahogany soundtrack, it was also included here and leads a set that's as diverse as Last Time I Saw Him, with a total of nine songs involving 16 songwriters.
