When Oliver Knussen first projected his Third Symphony in 1973, it was very much as a synthesis of his musical development up to that time. And, despite his tender years, this was already formidable. In most of Knussen’s scores proportional relationships play a determining role and the ratio of 4:5 underlies not only many of the Symphony’s poly-rhythmic textures, but even the relative time-lengths of its contrasting halves. Much of the thematic material also derives form a pair of three-note cells, while the note E natural serves something of a large-scale, quasi-tonal function as a point of departure and return.

Oliver Knussen (Stuart Oliver Knussen, Glasgow, Scotland, June 12, 1952 – 8 July 2018) was a Scottish composer and conductor. He began composing at about the age of six, but it was an ITV programme about his father's work with the London Symphony Orchestra that prompted the commissioning for his first symphony (1966-1967).

No amount of cleaning has managed to remove the glue and make the CDs playable. Performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, led by Oliver Knussen, it has a fast/slow/fast structure of three movements and a total time of over 45 minutes. Knussen led the best performance on record of the great Concerto for Orchestra. Carter was 84 when he started work on "Symphonia" in 1993, and prudently wrote each movement in response to separate commissions, not assuming he would live to complete it.

Today, Donald and Olly discuss a literary character whose influence persists through his Third Symphony and several subsequent works. Symphony N.
