Trumpeter Ralph Alessi convenes a quintet on this adventurous date, one of two concurrent releases on Ravi Coltrane's RKM label (the other being the duo disc Vice & Virtue). Joined by Don Byron on clarinet, David Gilmore on guitar, Drew Gress on bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums, Alessi displays an advanced and highly engaging approach to composition, marked by a relaxed use of space and a reliance on meticulous but natural-sounding unison rhythmic figures.

Ralph Peter Alessi (born March 6, 1963) is a jazz trumpeter and composer who has worked with saxophonist Steve Coleman. He has also performed with Uri Caine, Ravi Coltrane, Fred Hersch and Don Byron. Alessi is also the founder and director of the School for Improvisational Music and is on faculty at University of Nevada-Reno. His older brother Joseph Alessi is a classical trombonist. Ralph Alessi began studying the trumpet at the age of six with his father, Joseph Alessi. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where he freelanced as a classical player, playing engagements with the San Francisco Symphony, Opera and Chamber Orchestras. From 1985-1989, Ralph attended the California Institute for the Arts, where he studied with Charlie Haden and James Newton. In that time, he received a . degree in jazz trumpet performance and a . degree in jazz bass performance

Named for Alessi’s 2007 album This Against That, a recording that made JazzTimes magazine’s Top 10 for the year, the quintet features an impressive cast of New York’s most exploratory musicians including veteran bassist Drew Gress, pianist and M-BASE collective stalwart Andy Milne, and virtuoso drummer Mark Ferber.
