No Whisky for Callahan. In a backstreet of Paris, Callahan is waiting. es styles : blues, folk, envolées psychés.

We look into the touching, awkward new film about Bill Callahan, Apocalypse: A Bill Callahan Tour Film, in the new issue of Uncut, dated April 2013, and out now. As a companion piece, check out this fantastic piece with Callahan, aka Smog, recalling how he made his greatest albums, from May 2010’s Uncut (Take 156). I’m somewhere between a gumshoe and a journalist, Callahan says. A writer, not a symbol. I don’t want to be a performer who gets applause for quitting the bottle or for not committing suicide. There is such a thing as fiction.

Apocalypse is Bill Callahan's best release in some while, sustaining a unity and intimacy of mood throughout. A Western song-cycle, it opens with Callahan as the "Drover", herding cattle and exulting in his "wild, wild country". This rustic, allegorical fantasia finds Callahan communing with buffalos and bees, then coming full circle to where he has "no more drovering to do". The songs are cemented together by modest arrangements of guitar, flute and piano, wielded like watercolours. DOWNLOAD THIS Drover; Baby's Breath; America!; Riding for the Feeling; One Fine Morning. Callahan - who up until 2007 recorded as Smog - is a bit like indie rock’s version of The Most Interesting Man In the World. He’s nomadic and enigmatic, he’s had a number of relationships with semi-famous women (Chan Marshall, Joanna Newsom, et., and his masculine, rugged - yet vulnerable - image tends to go against the grain of North American Indie Rock (unless you’re Matt Berninger, who likely was heavily influenced by Callahan). And then there’s the idea of just picking his most acclaimed album (which is probably 1997’s Red Apple Falls) and spiraling outward. But there’s a much easier - dare I say it? - correct answer. You start with Knock Knock.
