Last Bus to Woodstock book. Beautiful Sylvia Kaye and another young woman had been seen. Shelves: crime, mystery, first-novel. I was unsure of what to expect when approaching Colin Dexter. Would he be an heir of Christie, Sayers, even . James? Would this book be a murder mystery, a police procedural, a combination, something else entirely? It was a combination, as it turned out, and a pretty decent one at that. James's Cover Her Face, in which I didn't really mention the police procedural aspect of the storytelling
Morse mystery before but will now read all the others. I've read so many mysteries that I can usually figure out who "done it" somewhere along the line but this ending really blindsided me as I'm sure it did every other reader. Really a very good book, well written, well drawn characters. When find myself thinking about a book several days after I finished it and thinking that I'll read it again to see if I missed anything then it's a good sign that this is a good writer. 2 people found this helpful. He wrote his first Morse novel, Last Bus to Woodstock, in 1975 while on holiday in Wales. The fictional detective was then killed off in the final book, The Remorseful Day. Inspector Morse and Lewis star Kevin Whately described him as "impish and bubbly and always fascinated with everybody and everything". He told BBC Oxford: "I think I'm incredibly lucky to have had 30 years of his friendship. He would always turn up - he loved being on set with us, and we loved having him there. He was a very warm, benign presence always

Colin Dexter, the author behind detective Inspector Morse and his adventures solving mysteries in Oxfordshire, has died at the age of 86, with the top names in crime writing lining up to pay tribute to a a kind, generous man. Dexter’s death at his home in Oxford was announced by his publisher Macmillan on Tuesday. His debut, Last Bus to Woodstock, arrived on shelves in 1975. It was a sleeper hit, but the series eventually took off, in part due to his main character Inspector Morse, a curmudgeonly detective who liked ale, crosswords and Wagner – sharing many of his creator’s interests. He’d no time for reports, Dexter wrote of Morse, in Last Bus to Woodstock. He suspected that about 95% of the written word was never read by anyone anyway.
Morse and Lewis investigate the murder of a young woman, Sylvia Kane, found dead in a pub car park. She was last seen at a bus stop asking for the times of the bus to Woodstock and was to meet as friend at the same pub where she was found. She had accepted a lift from someone in a red car and the police find an envelope on the dead girl addressed to Jennifer Coleby, a co-worker. This leads Morse to uncover a complex set of social inter-relationships and eventually, the girl's killer.
