The untitled ninth studio album by American rapper Nas, commonly referred to eponymously as Nas, was released on July 15, 2008 by The Jones Experience and Def Jam Recordings. Its original title Nigger was changed due to controversy surrounding the racial epithet. The album is distinguished for its political content, diverse sources of production, and provocative subject matter. The album features guest appearances from Chris Brown, Keri Hilson, Busta Rhymes, and The Game, among others.
The title of Nas’ eighth solo album started more conversations than the music did itself, with his Hip Hop Is Dead assertion jumpstarting industry-wide debates about the genre’s vitality in the mid-2000s. Nas dedicates the first third of the album to paying homage to the greats of yesteryear ( Where Are They Now ) and lamenting the state of the industry ( Carry On Tradition ), and he spends the rest of his time leading by example with artists who are up to the challenge. When it came time to follow up his assertion that hip hop was dead, Nas delivered an even more controversial message.
Although Nas' ninth studio album is Untitled, he initially intended to name the album Nigger but decided to change the title due to controversy around the word. The album’s cover shows whip scars on his back in the form of the letter ‘N’ as a tie-in with the album’s original title. Untitled became his fifth to debut at on the Billboard 200 chart and achieved gold status with support from the single Hero with Keri Hilson.

Even if the music isn't extraordinary, Nas himself is legendary on "Untitled" - and as long as racism is relevant, so is this album. 80. The new album, immersed in a soul-funk sound with guest spots from the Stylistics and the Last Poets, is contradictory at times, but the idea of building hope through about an hour's worth of music supersedes any effort to brew controversy.

From there, he recorded the album Untitled, an album of questions, answers, and truths about our questionable system of government and discrimination of not just blacks, but all kinds of people. Untitled is a diverse and brilliantly executed political record, setting itself apart from most hip hop, and even most of Nas’s discography. Say what you will about Nas, but this remains true: he’s a damn good MC. His lyrics on Untitled are more inspired than anything Nas has done with the exception of the majority of It was Written, and of course Illmatic
