Johnny & the Self Abusers (also variously known as Johnny and the Self-Abusers or other titles) was a 1977 punk rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. It notably included future Simple Minds musicians Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill. Johnny & the Self Abusers released one single: "Saints & Sinners" (with the b-side of "Dead Vandals"). The group is known today by early punk music fans for it's very rough, 'white noise' kind of sound.

Pablo Picasso - Simple Minds/Johnny & The Self Abusers (1977). So Pablo Picasso was never called an asshole. Fact no. 1: Yes, Simple Minds started as punk amateurs Johnny & The Self Abusers in early ‘77, playing covers of the Ramones’ Bliitzkrieg Bop, Brian Eno’s Baby’s On Fire or the VU’s White Light/White Heat, as well as some of their originals but broke up right after they recorded their debut single by the end of that same year. no. 2: Pablo Picasso was actually written by the co-founder of the band, John Milarky, about his brother; a blonde, leather clad motorbike fanatic and it also obviously drew inspiration from the Jonathan Richman song called Pablo Picasso.

Johnny & The Self-Abusers played their first gig on Easter Monday, 11 April 1977, at the Doune Castle pub in Glasgow. The band went on to play a summer of concerts in Glasgow. The band soon split into two factions, with Milarky and McNeil on one side and Kerr, Donald, Burchill and McGee on the other: at the same time, Milarky's compositions were being edged out in favour of those of Kerr and Burchill.

Johnny & the Self Abusers were one of Glasgow, Scotland's few punk bands, albeit a rather bizarrely entertaining one. Hailing from the city's south side, their gigs featured their own light show, replete with DayGlo skulls. They also looked the part, wearing generous amounts of makeup; one of the singers, who often went by the name Pripton Weird, lacked eyebrows. Signed to the Chiswick label, the group released one single in late 1977, Saints and Sinners
