Johnny Foreigner are an indie rock four-piece from Birmingham, UK, consisting of guitarist and lead vocalist Alexei Berrow, drummer Junior Elvis Washington Laidley, guitarist and visual artist Lewes Herriot, and bassist and vocalist Kelly Parker (née Southern). They are currently signed to Alcopop! Records for the UK and worldwide, and Lame-O Records for the USA; their previous label was Best Before Records, which is part of the artist management and nightclub concern Mama Group/ChannelFly Group.

Mono No Aware, their fifth album, which coincides with their ten-year anniversary as a band, is their most elastic and adventurous record since 2011’s Johnny Foreigner vs. Everything, in which unstable punk songs degenerated into piano ballads which then degenerated further into sound collages and spoken word. Mono No Aware isn’t as varied, but its structures have a tendency to digress, evaporate, and recombine, as if one is driving through a radically shrunken landscape. It radiates a feeling of seasickness, the guitars and drums lurching from extreme gravity into total freefall.

This album is musically diverse and highly entertaining from beginning to end. From the vaudeville harmonies at the beginning to the self-reflective lyrics I can't help but love it. For me, this album embodies what it means to believe in Disney 'true love' but to never experience it. Johnny Foreigner are artists in their craft, for their audience and they absolutely nail it this time. With that said, it's definitely not for everyone.
